Your electrical panel, sometimes called the breaker box or load center, is the hub that distributes power from the utility to every circuit in your home. Learning to read it is genuinely useful. It helps you shut off the right circuit during a repair, spot early warning signs of trouble, and understand whether your home can handle a big new load like an EV charger or a battery. Finding your main breaker and service size

Open the panel's outer door (the hinged cover, not the inner metal panel with screws). At the top, or sometimes the bottom or side, you will usually see one large breaker set apart from the rows of smaller ones. This is your main breaker, and it shuts off power to the entire panel at once. The number printed on its switch, such as 100 or 200, is your service amperage in amps.

Service size matters because it sets the ceiling on how much power your home can draw at one time. Common sizes are 100A and 200A. A 100A panel is often adequate for a smaller home with gas heat and appliances, while 200A gives much more headroom for modern electric loads like EV chargers, heat pumps, and batteries. If you cannot find a single main breaker, some homes have a separate main disconnect outside near the meter, or a "split-bus" panel with several main breakers. When in doubt, an electrician can identify your setup.

Single-pole vs double-pole breakers

The smaller switches in the panel are your branch-circuit breakers. They come in two basic forms:

Knowing this distinction is helpful because EV chargers and heat pumps almost always need a 240-volt double-pole circuit, which takes up two slots and adds a meaningful load to your panel.

  • Single-pole breakers take up one slot and supply 120 volts. These feed most standard circuits: lights, general outlets, and small appliances. They are typically rated 15 or 20 amps.
  • Double-pole breakers take up two slots and supply 240 volts by connecting to both "legs" of your electrical service. These feed large appliances like electric ranges, dryers, water heaters, central air, EV chargers, and heat pumps. They are usually rated 30 to 60 amps or more.

Labeling your circuits

Inside the door you will often find a directory listing what each breaker controls. Many are incomplete or out of date. Accurate labels are worth creating: they make it far safer and faster to shut off the right circuit later. You can map your panel by turning off one breaker at a time and noting which lights or outlets go dead, then writing a clear description next to each number. It is tedious but simple, and it does not require opening the panel's inner cover.

Open slots and tandem breakers

To add a new circuit, such as one for an EV charger, you need available space and available capacity. Two things to look for:

Having open slots does not automatically mean you have enough electrical capacity. Space and capacity are two separate questions, and only a proper load calculation answers the second one.

  • Open slots are empty positions where a new breaker can be installed. A double-pole circuit needs two adjacent open slots.
  • Tandem breakers are narrow breakers that fit two circuits into the space of one. If your panel is full of these, it may be a sign the panel is already near its physical limit. Not all panels accept tandems, and there are rules about how many are allowed.

What NOT to touch

You can safely open the outer door, flip breakers on and off, and read labels. You should never remove the inner cover (the metal panel held on by screws) or reach inside. Behind that cover are the main lugs and bus bars, which remain energized with lethal voltage even when the main breaker is off, because the utility feed ahead of the main is still live. Panel interior work is for licensed electricians only.

Warning signs to watch for

  • Warmth or heat coming from the panel cover or a specific breaker.
  • A buzzing, crackling, or humming sound.

  • A burning or "hot plastic" smell.
  • Breakers that trip repeatedly or feel loose.
  • Scorch marks or discoloration around any breaker.

Can you add an EV charger or battery?

Reading your panel gives you a rough first answer. Note your service size (100A vs 200A), whether you have open slots for a new double-pole breaker, and how heavily loaded your home already is with electric heat, cooking, water heating, and air conditioning. A 200A panel with open slots is well positioned; a nearly full 100A panel may need help.
