The usual culprits, in order: dead starting battery, stale fuel or fuel-supply fault, failed controller settings after an outage, or a transfer switch that never signals. Most are inexpensive fixes, found in one diagnostic visit.
Annually at minimum, oil, filter, battery test, coolant where applicable, and a loaded transfer test. Units that exercise weekly still need it; exercise cycles don't change oil.
That's the automatic transfer switch: a control-signal, contactor, or utility-sense fault. It's the most commonly failed and most commonly missed component, and squarely our specialty.
