Transfer Switch Installation
Quick answer
A transfer switch safely connects a generator or battery to your home's circuits during an outage, preventing dangerous backfeed.Manual or automatic transfer switches let you power selected circuits safely and legally.
About Transfer Switch Installation
A transfer switch is the safe, code-required link between a backup power source, a generator or battery, and your home's circuits. It isolates your home from the utility grid during an outage, preventing dangerous backfeed that can injure utility workers and damage your equipment.
We install manual transfer switches for portable generators and automatic transfer switches for standby generators and batteries, so selected circuits (or your whole home) switch over to backup power safely and, with an ATS, automatically.
Manual vs. automatic
- Manual (MTS), you switch over by hand; ideal for portable generators
- Automatic (ATS), switches instantly and on its own; for standby generators and batteries
- Sized to back up essential circuits or your whole home
Why the transfer switch is the real safety story
A generator without a proper transfer mechanism is a hazard in waiting: backfeeding through a dryer outlet can energize the utility line and injure the lineworker restoring your neighborhood. The transfer switch (or interlock) makes that physically impossible, main and generator can never be connected at once.
The choice between automatic and manual is lifestyle, not safety: an ATS starts the standby generator and switches in seconds while you're away; a manual switch or interlock costs far less and suits portable setups. Both are code-compliant when installed and inspected properly, and both are one-visit jobs for our electricians.
