A Tesla Powerwall is not a set-it-and-forget-it box. It has several operating modes that change how and when it charges and discharges, and choosing the right one depends on your main goal: outage protection, getting the most from your solar, or lowering your electricity bill. This guide explains each mode in plain English and helps you match the mode to what you actually want.

The main modes at a glance

Powerwall's behavior is controlled through the Tesla app. The core modes are Backup-only, Self-Powered, and Time-Based Control, with Storm Watch layered on top as an automatic safety feature. Here is what each one does.

Backup-only mode

In Backup-only mode, the Powerwall stays fully charged and does nothing during normal operation, holding its energy in reserve. It only discharges when the grid goes down. This maximizes the energy available for an outage because the battery is not being used day to day.

Best for: homeowners whose primary concern is outage protection and who are not trying to save money on daily electricity use. The trade-off is that you get no bill savings from the battery, since it simply sits full waiting for the next outage.

Self-Powered mode

Self-Powered mode is designed for homes with solar. During the day, your solar panels power your home and charge the Powerwall. In the evening and overnight, your home runs on the stored solar energy instead of pulling from the grid. The goal is to use as much of your own clean energy as possible and minimize what you buy from the utility.

Best for: solar homeowners who want to maximize self-consumption of their own production. You still keep a backup reserve (see below), but the battery actively cycles each day rather than sitting idle.

Time-Based Control

Time-Based Control (TBC) is built for saving money on time-of-use electricity rates, where the price per kWh changes by time of day. The Powerwall charges when electricity is cheap (off-peak) and discharges to power your home during expensive peak hours, so you avoid buying pricey peak electricity. With solar, it also optimizes when to store versus export energy based on your rate schedule.

Best for: homeowners on a time-of-use rate plan who want to cut their bill by shifting when they draw from the grid. If your utility charges the same price around the clock, TBC offers little benefit.

The backup reserve setting

Within Self-Powered and Time-Based Control, you set a backup reserve, a percentage of the battery held back and never used for daily cycling, so there is always some charge saved for an outage. Set it high (closer to 100%) if outage protection is your priority; set it lower if you want more of the battery working to reduce your bill. This setting lets you balance the two goals rather than choosing only one.

Storm Watch

Storm Watch is an automatic feature that works alongside your chosen mode. When Tesla receives a severe weather alert for your area, the system automatically charges the Powerwall to full, even if you would normally be cycling it, so you have maximum backup ready if the storm knocks out power. Once the alert clears, the Powerwall returns to your normal mode. You can enable or disable Storm Watch in the app.

Best for: essentially everyone with backup as any kind of priority. It costs nothing to leave on and quietly prepares your system before predicted outages.

Many homeowners use Self-Powered or Time-Based Control day to day with a modest backup reserve and Storm Watch on, capturing bill savings while still keeping some protection ready. Tesla occasionally updates and renames features, so check your app for the current options.

  • Outage protection above all: Backup-only, or Self-Powered/TBC with a high backup reserve.
  • Get the most from your solar: Self-Powered mode.
  • Lower your bill on a time-of-use rate: Time-Based Control.
  • Any home in a storm-prone area: keep Storm Watch enabled regardless of your main mode.
