What Is a Subpanel and When Do You Need One?

What a subpanel actually is

A subpanel is like a second, smaller hub downstream from it. A single large cable, called a feeder, runs from the main panel to the subpanel. From there, the subpanel splits that power into several individual circuits with their own breakers.
The important thing to understand is that a subpanel does not add more total power to your home. It redistributes the power you already have. Your main panel still sets the ceiling. A subpanel just makes it easier and cleaner to route circuits to a specific area.
How a subpanel is different from a service upgrade

A service upgrade increases the total amount of power your home can draw from the utility. For example, going from a 100-amp service to a 200-amp service. This involves your utility, a new main panel, often a new meter, and a heavier connection from the grid. It's the right move when your home simply doesn't have enough total capacity for everything you want to run.
A subpanel does not increase your total capacity. It takes some of the power you already have and delivers it to a new location with room for more breakers. If your main panel has spare capacity but is full of breaker slots, or is far from where you need power, a subpanel is usually the answer.
Sometimes you need both. If your home is already near its limit and you want to add major loads, an electrician may recommend a service upgrade first, then a subpanel to distribute the new capacity.

Garages, workshops, and detached buildings
If you're powering a workshop with saws, a compressor, welders, or a lift, you may need several dedicated circuits in one spot. Running one feeder to a subpanel in the garage is cleaner and safer than running many long individual circuits from the main panel.

A room addition or an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) often needs its own set of circuits for outlets, lighting, heating, and cooling. A subpanel keeps those circuits organized in the new space and makes future work easier.
Adding EV charging and a home battery
Modern upgrades like an EV charger and a Tesla Powerwall can each need their own circuits and space in your panel. - Clearances and access. Panels need clear working space in front of them and can't be blocked or placed in prohibited spots like closets in some cases.
- Proper grounding. Detached buildings often require their own grounding electrode, such as ground rods.
