GFCI vs AFCI Breakers: What They Do and Why They Matter
GFCI and AFCI breakers look almost identical sitting in your electrical panel, but they guard against two very different dangers. One is built to protect people from electric shock. The other is built to protect your house from catching fire. Understanding the difference helps you know why a breaker keeps tripping, where your home needs each type, and when a nuisance trip is actually a warning worth taking seriously.
What a GFCI breaker does
GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter. Its job is to protect you from electric shock. In a healthy circuit, the amount of current flowing out on the "hot" wire should exactly match the amount returning on the neutral wire. A GFCI constantly compares the two. If it detects even a tiny imbalance, meaning current is escaping somewhere it should not, it shuts the circuit off in a fraction of a second.
That escaping current is called a ground fault. It can happen when electricity finds an unintended path to ground, and one of those paths can be a person. This is why GFCI protection lives in wet or damp areas where the shock risk is highest: bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages, basements, outdoor outlets, and near pools or hot tubs. A GFCI reacts fast enough to prevent a shock from becoming a serious injury.
What an AFCI breaker does
AFCI stands for arc-fault circuit interrupter. Its job is to prevent electrical fires. An arc fault is a dangerous spark that happens when electricity jumps across a gap or a damaged connection, such as a wire nicked by a nail, a cord pinched under furniture, a loose terminal screw, or aging, brittle insulation. These arcs can reach very high temperatures and ignite nearby wood, insulation, or dust.
An AFCI is designed to recognize the unique electrical "signature" of a hazardous arc and shut the circuit down before it starts a fire. Because arc faults can happen anywhere in a home's wiring, AFCI protection is generally required for the circuits feeding living spaces: bedrooms, living rooms, family rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and similar areas.
Dual-function breakers: both jobs in one
Many modern homes use dual-function breakers, sometimes labeled DF or CAFCI/GFCI. These combine both technologies in a single device, protecting against shock and against arc faults at the same time. They are common in areas where code calls for both kinds of protection, such as a kitchen, where you have both water nearby and general living-area wiring. Where code requires each type
Electrical codes have steadily expanded the required use of both technologies, and the exact rules depend on your local code and when your home was built or last updated. As a general guide, the National Electrical Code requires:
Older homes are not automatically required to be retrofitted, but any time circuits are added or significantly modified, the new work usually must meet today's standards. This is one reason a permitted, inspected upgrade matters.

Why breakers trip and what nuisance tripping means
A trip is the breaker doing its job. When a GFCI or AFCI cuts power, treat it as information, not just an annoyance. Common real causes include a genuine ground fault (a failing appliance, moisture in an outlet), a genuine arc fault (damaged wiring or a loose connection), or an overloaded circuit.
Sometimes a breaker trips when there is no true fault. This is called nuisance tripping. It can be caused by long wiring runs, shared neutrals, certain motors or electronics, or an older AFCI reacting to normal but "noisy" electrical signals from some devices. Nuisance tripping is frustrating, but the answer is never to simply swap in a standard breaker to make the tripping stop. That removes the protection code requires and defeats the safety purpose.
EV chargers and nuisance tripping
EV chargers add a specific wrinkle. A Level 2 charger draws a large, steady load for hours, and the charger itself already contains built-in ground-fault protection (often called CCID). Putting a second GFCI device upstream of a charger that has its own internal protection can cause the two to interfere, leading to trips that are not caused by any real fault. That is why the circuit design, the breaker type, and the wiring for an EV charger should be handled by an electrician who installs them regularly.
