What grounding actually does

When everything metal is bonded together, there is no voltage difference between two surfaces you might touch at the same time. That matters because shock happens when current flows through your body from a higher voltage to a lower one. If the metal sink, the metal appliance, and the ground you stand on are all at the same potential, there is no path through you. Bonding also ensures that if a fault energizes one metal part, the connected path carries enough current to trip the breaker fast.

The grounding electrode system

The physical connection to the earth is called the grounding electrode system. In most homes this includes one or two ground rods driven deep into the soil outside, often supplemented by connections to the metal underground water pipe and, in newer construction, to the rebar in the concrete foundation footing (sometimes called a Ufer ground). A heavy copper conductor, the grounding electrode conductor, links these electrodes back to your main panel.

Modern electrical code has specific rules about the size of these conductors, how many rods are required, how they connect, and where the neutral and ground are bonded together (which should happen only at the main service, not at subpanels). These details are not cosmetic. Getting them wrong can leave the system unable to clear a fault properly.

Why panel upgrades bring grounding up to code

If your home is older, its grounding system may reflect the code in force when it was built decades ago. Older homes sometimes have a single undersized ground rod, corroded connections, ungrounded outlets, or a reliance on metal water piping that has since been partly replaced with plastic, breaking the path.
